6 Fire TV Recast Alternatives

Fire TV Recast Alternatives

We all have appliances that we simply can’t do without, and DVRs have become an absolutely necessary household item now.

With the ability to record live TV and watch it later, these appliances are great for the busy family.

And the Amazon FireTV Recast was one of the best over-the-air DVRs, and was quite popular in the DVR market.

However, what happens when your beloved OTA DVR is discontinued by the parent company?

If you are currently confused and upset about the fact that Amazon stopped the production of the Fire TV Recast in 2022, then you have come to the right place.

In this article, I will introduce you to 6 great Fire TV recast alternatives you can shift to, now that you can no longer buy it.

#1 HDHomeRun

HDHomeRun

This is a device made by SiliconDust and is a TV Tuner that will allow you to stream live TV from any part of your house.

What this does is that it will source live tv and then connect it to your home network.

You can then start recording and watching live TV, your favorite programs, (even stop, rewind, and fast-forward the programs).

It will sound a bit complicated, given the multiple steps it takes for the device to stream live TV in your home.

But all you have to do is simply plug in your usual TV antennae into HDHomeRun, and then connect the device to the home router.

And VOILA! You now have live TV streaming!

#2 Tablo OTA DVR

Tablo OTA DVR

Tablo DVR, much like the other DVR appliances, connects to an antenna, and then to the router.

With the Tablo networked DVRs, you have the ability to stream into any smart device in your home, from smart TVs, phones, and tablets to other devices.

You can watch live TV from any part of your house, or from wherever your wifi system can reach you.

To stream Live TV, however, you WILL need to download the Tablo app to your smart devices, which is one simple step you can get done in a couple of minutes.

With Table HDMI DVRs, you can go further and connect it to your smart TV, and will also have a remote. However, they are slightly more expensive

Nevertheless, their streaming services will be of better quality than the networked versions.

#3 TiVo EDGE

TiVo EDGE

There are two variants of TiVo Edge – the one for cable and the one for antenna.

If you want to buy cable, or if you already HAVE cable and would like to keep it, TiVo EDGE for Cable would be the option for you.

If you want to use the antenna instead, you can use TiVo Edge for Antenna. However, the antenna version will cost you 50$ less (the cable version is 400$).

The one made for the antenna will have 2TB storage to save all your favorite programs, and will also stream and record 4 channels at a time.

However with TiVo EDGE for cable, you will have the ability to stream and record six channels at the same time, plus the 2TB storage.

#4 AirTV DVR

AirTV DVR, just like other OTA DVRs, can let you stream live TV on smart devices, with the simple use of an antenna and a trusty router.

Unfortunately with this DVR, you will have to buy your OWN external storage to store all the recorded programs. And you can only record two shows at a time.

However, with newer models like AirTV Anywhere, you have built-in storage of 1TB, and you can record four channels at the same time, for later viewing.

#5 Plex DVR

Plex DVR

Plex DVR is an added option in Plex TV, which is actually a server that you can install and subscribe to, in order to stream live TV.

You will, however, need an antenna for this as well, and also a tuner.

You need to simply connect the antenna to the tuner, and then the tuner to the router. However, in order to get a DVR facility, you MUST subscribe to it for the price of around 4.99$ per month.

Once you get this, you will be able to stream and record Live TV to enjoy later.

#6 Channels DVR

Channels DVR

Channels is a DVR server that you can download and subscribe to and is used A LOT with tuners like HDHomeRun.

You can download it to your smart devices, and it will connect to all streaming sources and stream programs and record them in the Channels app on your smart devices.

For this to work, you will, however, need a tuner (like HDHomeRun) for this to properly work.

It works in connection with actual tuners, and will not be able to stand alone and function as a service provider.

Instead, it connects to all streaming services that you have access to and brings all your favorite programs to one app in your smart devices, where you can watch them as you please.
